Sleeper sofas have come a long way since they were introduced in the 1930s. Invented by Bernard Castro in 1931, sleeper sofas remained virtually unchanged for 70 years. While practical, they were sadly lacking in two key areas: they weren’t always as comfortable to sit on as a regular sofa, let alone sleep on. With uncomfortable cushions and thin, flimsy mattresses, sleeper sofas were something purchased strictly as a necessity, and dreaded by overnight guests.
We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, yet mattresses are one of the most overlooked items in our homes. Since mattresses are typically covered with sheets, blankets and pillows, they tend to be out of sight, out of mind. As a result, the average person will not replace a mattress when it becomes worn out. Even if they are experiencing difficulty sleeping, they will typically still wait another 2-5 years before they decide to buy a new one. That just doesn’t make sense, and it’s hurting us. → Read more
